# Does Laka Cover E-bikes with Throttles?

April 1, 2026

## Does Laka cover e-bikes with throttles?

At Laka, we love the boost an e-bike provides. However, to keep things fair and legal for the entire collective, we only cover e-bikes that meet the UK’s **Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC)** regulations.

## Is my throttle-assisted e-bike covered?

Whether your e-bike is covered depends on how the throttle functions:

- **Yes, it’s covered:** If the throttle only provides **"walk-assist"** (powering the bike up to 3.7mph or 6kmh).
- **No, it’s not covered:** If the throttle can propel the e-bike up to 15.5mph without the rider needing to pedal. This is often called a **"twist-and-go" throttle**.

## Why doesn't Laka cover "twist-and-go" throttles?

Under UK law, if a throttle can power a bicycle up to 15.5mph without pedalling, that bicycle is no longer classified as an **EAPC**. Instead, it is legally considered a **motor vehicle** (similar to a moped or motorbike).

Because these vehicles require separate registration, taxing, and specific motor insurance, they fall outside of our community-driven bicycle cover.

## What are the UK legal requirements for e-bikes (EAPCs)?

To keep things fair for the **C** ollective and ensure everyone is riding legally, your e-bike must meet the UK Government’s specific rules for **Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles (EAPCs)**. To be eligible for Laka cover, the e-bike must:

- **Be pedal-powered:** The e-bike must have pedals that can be used to move it.
- **Limit motor power:** The electric motor's maximum continuous rated power must not exceed **250 watts**.
- **Cut off at the limit:** The electrical assistance must automatically stop when the e-bike reaches **15.5mph**.

You can usually find these specifications in your e-bike manual or on a sticker located on the bike frame.
